Welcome to Black Girls Sweat Too™: More Than a Brand—A Movement
Share
Hey y'all! My name is Monique, and Black Girls Sweat, Too™ was born from something much deeper than a love for fitness. It was born from a calling.
Looking back, movement has always been a part of who I am. As a child, I loved being active in ballet and tap classes. In high school, I participated in auxiliary and flag dance, and if there was music playing, you could count on me to be the first one throwing a stand. I've always believed movement should be joyful. Whether I was dancing, performing, cutting a rug or simply putting my boots on the ground haha. Being active made me feel alive.
But like many of us, life happened.
I built a career in Corporate America, followed the path that looked safe, and spent years working hard to help build someone else's dream. Deep down, though, I knew I was meant to create something that reflected my own purpose.
So I made one of the biggest decisions of my life—I walked away from the comfort of corporate life to pursue what truly sets my soul on fire.
Black Girls Sweat Too™ is the result of that leap of faith.
Why This Movement Matters
For far too long, Black women have carried the weight of everyone else while often placing our own health last.
The reality is heartbreaking. According to the CDC, nearly 60% of Black women in the United States are living with obesity, compared with lower rates in many other populations. Black women are also disproportionately affected by chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. These conditions don't just affect our quality of life—they impact our families, our communities, and our future.
These statistics aren't just numbers.
They're our mothers.
Our sisters.
Our daughters.
Our friends.
They're us.
For me, this mission became even more personal when someone I love was diagnosed with diabetes amongst other things. Watching someone close to me navigate the daily realities of managing a chronic illness was a wake-up call. It made me realize how precious our health truly is and how important it is to take action before it's too late.
I want to be here—for the people I love.
I want to grow older with them.
I want to build memories with them.
And I want the same for every woman who becomes part of this community.
We Deserve Better
Too often, conversations around Black women's health are reduced to one harmful phrase:
"Just lose the weight."
If only it were that simple.
Health isn't just physical. It's emotional. It's mental. It's cultural. It's about stress, access, confidence, trauma, support systems, and having environments where you feel safe enough to begin.
You can't shame someone into healing.
You can't judge someone into confidence.
And you certainly can't expect women to fight battles alone that were never meant to be carried alone.
Many Black women walk into gyms already feeling like we don't belong. We worry about being judged, stared at, or compared. We've all seen the videos online of Black women being judged for wearing certain clothes or bonnets in the gym to protect their hair...It's not common that you walk into a gym and see instructors, athletes, or wellness leaders who look like us.
That's why Black Girls Sweat Too™ exists.
To serve as representation. Seeing Black women excel in sports, leadership, and wellness creates possibility and inspiration.
This Is More Than Fitness
Black Girls Sweat Too™ is about reclaiming our health, our confidence, and our joy.
It's about celebrating the elite athlete and the woman taking her very first walk around the block.
It's about choosing progress over perfection.
It's about creating spaces where Black women feel seen, supported, encouraged, and celebrated.
It's about building a community where we lift each other up instead of tearing each other down.
One day, I envision Black Girls Sweat Too™ becoming more than an activewear brand. I see fitness events, wellness experiences, partnerships with incredible women athletes, and physical spaces where Black women can move, heal, connect, and thrive together.
This is just the beginning.
Whether you're starting your fitness journey, getting back on track, or simply looking for a community that understands you, know this:
You belong here.
You deserve to feel strong.
You deserve to feel healthy.
You deserve to take up space.
And you never have to walk this journey alone.
Welcome to Black Girls Sweat Too™.
Let's sweat.
Let's heal.
Let's grow.
And repeat.
With love,
Monique
